Allison Francis is arguably one of the lead female musicians at Boston University. A junior now, the Portland singer/songwriter is a face for BU’s student-run record label, Base Trip Records, and has played a variety of shows around the Boston area. This fall, Allison has managed to write several new acoustic songs, waiting to release them at the right time–but for now she is playing them live for audiences at her shows.
Her latest material is the kind of acoustic music that very much relies on its lyrics–and the lyrics are not simple, catchy words of pop. She writes and rewrites, finding inspiration in BU-themed parties and people she loves. She finds meaningful and sometimes discomforting lines that grab the listener, and repeats them unabashedly–such as the writing in her new songs “Colors” and “Last Night I Heard You Laughing.” Her deep, coarse voice softly scratches the tops of vowels in her songs, bringing attention to some of her most delicate lines.
Allison will be performing at BU Central’s Base Trip Records Showcase this Friday. Look out for her new songs and check out the other BU music acts like Rapper Steph and Aviator.
