Fashion Flash: Goodbye Lohan, American Apparel Terrorists and Gap’s New Look

As if Karl Lagerfeld isn’t happy enough with the request to shoot the 2011 Pirelli Calendar, that je ne sais quoi about him is getting an official title.  French President Nicholas Sarkozy nominated Lagerfeld as a commander of the French Legion of Honour, which was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 as the highest decoration in France. Lagerfeld will join contemporaries Sonia Rykiel, Azzedine Alaia, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano.  Specifics about the ceremony are yet to be determined, but if it is anything like the man himself, it is bound to be spectacular.

You know Twiggy as the super-model of the 60s and the most forgiving judge on America’s Next Top Model, but you will soon know her as a fashion designer with the launch of  “Twiggy London” which will debut on HSN April 3.  According to the press release, the line will embody “London chic,” with wallet-friendly prices between $29 and $99.

When one fashion career begins, another ends, and this time it’s Lindsay Lohan’s.  After being hired as Artistic Director for Emmanuel Ungaro in 2010, both the label and starlet have confirmed that she was not involved in the newest AW10 collection.  The heart-shaped pasties will not be missed.  Sorry, Lindsay.

Pasty-friendly American Apparel’s Williamsburg store was damaged by an angry mob of bloggers clad in all black.  The “retail terrorists” threw rocks at the windows and lit trash on fire in the street before being apprehended by the police.  Somebody wasn’t happy about the results of The Best Bottom contest.

In other destructive fashion news, the entire Gap store in Vancouver has been turned upside-down— but not out of malice.  Featuring mannequins suspended from the ceiling, overturned cars and storefront signs rotated 180 degrees, the American brand is attempting to market its customer loyalty program, Sprize.  With the slogan, “shopping turned on its head,” Sprize addresses frustrated customers who buy a full priced products that go on sale by giving back SprizeMoney to use on future purchases.

While Canada has the Gap discounts (for now), New York has flying cats.  At Vivienne Westwood’s AW10 show, during the final walk someone threw a stuffed cat at her face, which missed by inches.  The model next to her picked it up, gave the furry friend a hug, and started kissing the model next to her.  That’s the fashion industry for you.

  1. Great Post, Congrats Karl!!!!! Not that this is outward destruction, but at Fashion Week there was a jacket lined with actual Monkey hair (It was either Fendi or Dolce – I can’t remember). I’m no PETA activist but, I was totally creeped out.
