New Buzz Band Yawn at Middle East Tonight

The last night I was at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, I saw the band Yawn open for Local Natives. The sold-out crowd was incredibly receptive to the local band who had never played the large Lincoln Hall venue before.

I talked with the band backstage about growing as a group, and how they’ve already gone through different phases of their sound. They used to sound more rock-ish, and didn’t add the color they have now to their music until the last couple years.

Yawn is a young group of four guys who have been playing together since they were in high school. They sound like a new and fresh Animal Collective, reinventing the ways musicians play live music. They’re ambitious, and hungry, to jump into the national realm of indie music and see what’s next.

They’re so hungry, they took it upon themselves to get to the next step. The band emailed big-time booker and music man Robert English at the beginning of the year and gave him their music. Not long after, English emailed them back and asked if they wanted a spot at the Fader Fort South by Southwest showcase in Austin, Texas in March. The band said yes.

One crazy music video and a few months later, the band is really taking off.

Yawn’s playing at the Middle East Downstairs tonight with Steel Train, as part of a small northeast  tour. I’d recommend going and bringing friends. They’re a buzz band worth your time.
