Casino Night Bigger and Better Than Ever

Boston University senior Taylor Riley expects a line out of the Metcalf Ballroom by 8:00 p.m. Friday night, when students will be enjoying the 14th annual Casino Night, which Riley and her fellow School of Management senior Brad Allworth have been in charge of planning. Although the SMG Government spearheaded the event, they have received support from about fifteen other student groups on campus.

“We had a great committee within mostly SMG student government and they’ve have been helping with ideas and poster designs,” Riley said.

Tickets for Casino Night are $15, which include 10 raffle tickets, playing chips, free food, and a cash bar for those over 21 (appropriately dubbed the “High Rollers Club”) . Various groups have donated over $3,000 in raffle prize, including an XBOX 360, tickets to the Blue Man Group, and a signed Boston Bruins hockey puck.

Proceeds from Casino Night will go to two organizations: the Terrace Arts Project on Mission Hill and Charity Water. The Terrace Arts Project helps teach underprivileged youth through art, and Charity Water delivers clean drinking water to people in developing nations. SMG found the Terrace Arts Project through an alum who serves on the board of the organization, and found Charity Water through a current SMG student that works with the project.

Casino started fourteen years ago as a small-scale charity fundraiser solely for SMG students, and has grown throughout the years to become “pretty much an all university wide event” with over 800 students in attendance last year, Riley said.

“What it originally was back in ’97 was just for SMG students. They did it in the SMG atrium and there were only 200, 300 people there,” Riley said. She noted that for a period of time the event was also held over Parent’s Weekend, with parents being able to participate in the event.

Other student groups working with the SMG Government include the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Hospitality and Administration, and College of General Studies governments. All organizations involved either donated money or volunteers to the event. The SHA Government is also donating homemade desserts for the event.

In response to feedback from last year, Riley said the committee organizing the event doubled the number of tables they will have for students to play at.

Pre-sale for tickets will continue through Friday at 4:00 p.m. in the GSU link, the SMG atrium and the Info Desk on the second floor of the George Sherman Union. Tickets are also available at the door.
