Toto, I don’t think we’re at Dunkin’ Donuts anymore.

Following the scent of freshly baked bread and pastries through the rows of quaint Victorian homes, you will find one of Boston’s hidden gems: Clear Flour Bread. Located on a quiet residential street, Clear Flour has been luring customers in with delectable breads and pastries baked fresh daily and with the best ingredients possible. Although small in size, this bakery is like no other In Boston, and it could easily rival a respectable bakery in Paris. Clear Flour offers an authentic taste of France and Italy, and it’s only a click away for most BU students.

On any given day you’ll find a great selection of all types of bread, ranging from the standard pumpernickel to one called New England Night, loaded crunchy pecans and tart cranberries. Bread here comes in all shapes and sizes from small dinner rolls to ones shaped like Christmas wreaths. Some breads come with fillings of slow roasted tomatoes or top quality cheese. With 27 different varieties to choose from, the selection is a bit mind boggling. If you are a newcomer I would suggest starting off with a traditional French baguette or a loaf of rustic Italian. Both are mild tasting with a crunchy outside and soft, moist interior. Simply adorned with a smidgen of butter, you will never want to go back to the grocery store for bread.

Clear Flour Bread also sells spectacular pastries. Although I have not sampled all of their treats, the few I’ve tried are enough to make me want to go back every week. The pastries are artfully constructed and a joy to look at, and they taste as good as they look. The rustic tarts, in particular, are truly things of beauty. Clear Flour always uses seasonal and fresh fruit, and the result equals a juicy, tart, and sweet flavor bomb. The bakery’s cookies and cakes are also sure to be among the best you have ever had, and the petite cakes look like something from an Alice in Wonderland tea party.

All of Clear Flour’s breads and pastries are described on their website, along with specials for the week and month. This would be a fantastic place to get a treat for that special someone on Valentine’s Day, but honestly you don’t need any excuse to visit. Bring your friends, follow the path to Clear Flour Bread, and leave all other bakeries behind.

Clear Flour is located at 178 Thorndike St. Brookline MA 02446
