Allston Village Street Fair Celebrates the People

Harvard Avenue will be even more crowded with college students than usual this weekend for the Allston Village Street Fair on Sunday, September 25th between noon and 6:00 pm. The 5th year of the multicultural festival, aimed at celebrating the rich diversity of Allston residents and described as “Boston’s Hippest Multicultural Festival,” will provide music, food, comedy and family fun to the more than 100,000 loyal participants.

Sponsors and vendors will line Harvard Ave., while more than 20 bands and performers entertain the wide audience. The website explains that this multicultural Street Fair, produced by the Parents and Community Build Group, will be offering what Allston actually has to offer all the time: “a litany of live performances, several local businesses taking to the streets and thousands of people coming together in one giant party.”

This year the party is turned up a notch with the introduction of a Mardis Gras theme – turning Harvard Ave. into Bourbon Street- so expect the beads to be littering the streets. With bands like The Boston Horns and Blue Mountain Bustdown to Mesrte Cabeca – “Grupo Capoeira Brasil”, a group that teaches and demonstrates the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira, and Snap Boogie, a breakdown troupe, this festival covers all the cultural bases and is sure to provide something for everyone. Entertainment will also include face painting, juggling, the Boston League of Women Wrestlers, belly dancing and so much more.

Admission and entertainment are free and the sponsors are giving away all kinds of goods to ensure that the fair can show the diversity, vibrant culture and delicious cuisine of Boston. Proceeds from the sponsors benefit the all-voluntary Parent and Community Build Group, Inc. and the Ringer Park Partnership Group, two organizations that provide community service resources to Allston and the surrounding towns.

PCBG, Inc. was established in 2004 to strengthen the community through the creation and sponsorship of events that aim to improve the “quality of life of our residential and commercial neighbors, encourage civic participation, green space advocacy and stewardship and have a positive impact on the Allston/Brighton community,” according to the Allston Village Street Fair’s information.

Tavern in the Square, Radio 92.9 and Whole Foods Market are just a few of the sponsors supporting this community and participating in the fair . There is a facebook page for the event as well as a count down to the second this Allston-style celebration will begin, so check online to make sure you don’t miss it.
