Razzle Dazzle Me: Why I Love the Razzie Awards

As the rest of the world geared up for the Oscars this past weekend, I anxiously waited for the nominations for the anti-Oscars, the 32nd Golden Raspberry Awards. Whereas the Oscars highlight the best movies of the year, the Razzies, this year held on April Fools’ Day, honor the best of the worst.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good tearjerker or philosophical retrospect of humanity; I even make it a point to watch the Oscar nominated films before the big night. I’ve just come to the realization I’m not “Oscar worthy.” I’m not the type to watch great cinema every night. I like movies that make me laugh, with them or at them. I have to be in the right mood to watch gut wrenching death scenes or keep up with complicated plots. It takes no brainpower to get through a bad movie, and the Razzies provide me a list year after year of movies I will watch over and over and over.

Case in point, I have seen every Twilight film in theaters and out. I make it a point to check movie times, drive to the theater, and pay up to $10 to watch a movie that I know will be bad. The bad acting, the long drawn out glances across a misty forest, the most awkward make-out scenes captured on film–these are things I can’t hate about those movies because there’s nothing to love.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 is nominated for 8 Razzies, including worst actor for Taylor Lautner and worst actress for Kristen Stewart. I remember sitting in the back row of the theater when I saw the movie. I laughed hysterically, tears rolling down my eyes, through the entirety of the film, drawing wayward stares from devoted “Twi-hards” that made up most of the theater. When I watch a movie, I don’t want to think about it; I just want to enjoy myself.

The big “winner” this year is Adam Sandler who received a record 11 nominations for the movies “Jack and Jill” and “Just Go With It.” Now, I have yet to see these films (believe me, they’re at the top of the list), but I really enjoy Adam Sandler’s movies. I’ve seen The Waterboy, Big Daddy, and Happy Gilmore, all nominated for Razzies more times than I can count. Yeah, he’s not a great actor, but his movies just know how to get a laugh out of me any time. They’re predictable and sometimes stupid, but that’s okay; I can be too.

I think the main reason I watch Razzie nominated films more than Oscar nominated ones is because I’m not as artistic as I think I am. I pride myself on having seen movies from the 1930s and 40s, and I can say things like “film noir” and know what I’m talking about. But really, I’m just another idiot looking for an easy laugh.

  1. SO true. there’s nothing like a good BAD movie. i hate adam sandler movies, although that is the reason they are great to watch when you’re not feeling artistic or feel like getting psychologically or emotionally involved in a film when you don’t have the time or energy to. hilarious article and so spot on.
