Approximately 110 Days of Summer

When the dog days of summer finally begin to fade, it feels all too right to reflect on the glories and good times of the last few months. The Quadlings have been quite busy, whether they were trotting the globe (Quad staffers visited Los Angeles, Israel, and many places in between) or boning up on classes right here in Boston!

Summer 2012 exploded unexpectedly into a riot of activity. I was all set to sit back in my native Providence and lounge, but that did not happen. Sudden and spontaneous trips to Israel, New York, Chicago, Wisconsin, Montreal, and Vermont sprang up around me, with music festivals, museum trips, family outings, beach bonfires and many, many dance parties in between. It’s hard to do justice to how wonderful this summer has been to me, and I can’t wait to get back to BU and The Quad!

I was a Program Advisor for Orientation. This means I wore fancy threads, developed an affected phone voice, and shook a lot of people’s hands. I also wrote and directed the skit that you saw, and got a pointy silver name badge all my own. When I wasn’t working, I was at dancing at Allston basement shows, sleeping on the beach, or sampling every craft beer my newly-21-year-old self could get my grimy hipster hands on. Summer in Boston: do it at least once, kiddos.

I spent my summer trying to stay alive in the New York City heat without an air conditioner, budgeting my dwindling savings account while interning full time with no pay, eating as many Mister Softees and street pretzels as I could, and even meeting up with a few Quad alums!

This summer I flew out to LA the week after finals and frolicked amongst the stars. As in, my friends and I drove through Bel Air singing the Fresh Prince theme song and having sporadic run ins with Lindsey Lohan and her newly injected lips (they were a beauty, if I do say so myself). After reaching the peak of my summer by the end of May with that trip, I worked at a country club averaging 12 hours a day and enjoyed the lack of a school routine. Fastest summer by far.

I did nothing this summer, but I did realize that I really need a degree because I am not friendly enough for retail.

Got ahead on credits, learned the ins-and-outs of food service, went through countless rolls of film,  met some the of most incredible people in the world, and didn’t get a tan.

I spent the summer feeding the hungry and catching up on current events–and by that I mean working at an Italian Ice shop and watching all seven seasons of How I Met Your Mother.

I spent the summer in Brooklyn working at Bargemusic, the floating chamber music hall. Between remarkable performances of classical masterworks, I was out eating tacos, carousing at local bars, and chillin’ hardcore on my rooftop.

I spent approximately a third of my approximately 110 days of summer as a news intern for the Hartford Courant, working and writing in the newsroom of one of those ancient things called a print newspaper (but had the time of my life!). I also read an awful lot of Bret Easton Ellis and prepared for an awesome year right where I belong, in Boston with The Quad.

I probably drove over a thousand miles this summer (to nowhere in particular) and these songs were always playing over the car’s stereo. Here’s my summer, condensed into a playlist:
1. “Roadrunner” by The Modern Lovers
2. “Fear and Loathing in Mahwah, NJ” by Titus Andronicus
3. “Banshee Beat” by Animal Collective
4. “A Good Place” by Grizzly Bear
5. “Cocaine Blues” by Jay Abner
6.”Werewolf Song” by Michael Hurley
7. “Do I Have Power” by Timber Timbre
8. “Queen Bitch” by David Bowie
9. “Sister Ray” by The Velvet Underground

My summer was the perfect combination of relaxation and work. I worked three jobs; lifeguarding, waitressing, and swim instructing. Balancing all three took some work, but before anyone feels too sorry for me, I should also mention that I got to abandon all three jobs for ten days to travel to Europe. In this whirlwind ten day trip, I toured London, Venice, and Paris, saw beautiful sights, and ate some wonderful food. Overall, it was a fantastic summer filled with fun, friends, and work, and I am looking forward to an even better school year.

This summer my dreams came true as an intern at The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. When I was not at the studio in Manhattan, I was publishing articles for The Huffington Post, Next Gen Journal, and HAHAJK. This summer I also made it into the quarter finals of the 2012 JFEME Screenwriting Competition and scored a gig at MTVU’s Stand-up Comedy Showcase at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.
