QUADCAST: Hey London, Obama or Romney?

Audio QUADcast: Hey London, Obama or Romney?

Fellow Quadling Jon Christianson and I are abroad in London right now, and from all the way over here, the election feels weird. The polls have been tight lately. Romney and Obama are really neck in neck. It’s anyone’s race at this point.

But from across the pond, it sure doesn’t feel that way. London, like the rest of Europe, is what most Americans would consider to be very liberal. So when we took a tape-recorder down to Picadilly Circus Monday evening at quittin’ time with the idea of asking tourists and locals “Obama or Romney?” we already knew what the response would look like.

But we didn’t realize how hard it would be to find someone who would, if given the chance, vote for Romney. It was tough to get people to talk to us—the city of London was suspicious of our tape recorder and our friendly demeanor—and it was even tougher for us to find anyone who didn’t support Obama. As time wore on, we made a game out of it. We looked for older people and people with briefcases, thinking maybe they would be Romney supporters. No luck.

Don’t think that we mean to imply that everyone in the UK, or everyone in Europe, is pro-Obama. But a recent poll that’s been making the rounds has made it clear: if Europe had its say, Obama would be secure for a second term tonight.

You can hear the results of our excursion in the clip.

One Comment on “QUADCAST: Hey London, Obama or Romney?”

  1. Hi Kelly I like the Hey London story. I can almost imagine you chasing elderly people with briefcases.

I think those pro-Obama views are fairly typical of the north of England too where I live. I don’t think Romney’s domestic economic message resonates here in the UK so all of that is just discared here. Most of the Republican’s social views are almost repellant to most of middle England so that wouldn’t have done him any favors either.

It would be interesting to see how the views of overseas voter compare to those at home in the states. I wonder if there has been any recent polling. Its a big block of votes.

    All the best
