QuadCast, Episode 1: An Introduction

Quadcast

I can count on one hand the number of BU traditions I know of—walking across the campus on Matriculation, going to hockey games, Marathon Monday, painting that rock on the BU Beach, and… that’s about it.

It seems a bit incongruous to me, because when I was younger, colleges seemed like places that were all about tradition. College was ivy-covered buildings, drinks at the student bar, games of frisbee on the quad. None of this appealed to 18-year-old me, so I applied to BU precisely because it was the only place I visited that didn’t feel like it was a Whit Stillman movie, or trying to be. It was an un-college college.

I’ve been hanging around BU for more than four years, and feel like I’ve done it all at this point. I did a program here when I was in high school, stayed on campus for two summers, studied in BU’s London campus, enrolled in Dual-Degree Program, worked for Orientation. I’m a walking, talking brochure for this place.

But even after all this time, there’s a lot I still can’t identify about this school: if we’re not about traditions, what is our campus culture? What is the average BU student like? What makes us…us?

That’s what Quadcast will explore this semester. We’ll try to get a grip on our very large, very fluid campus that is constantly changing its face, shape and landscape. We’ll stop and listen—to your stories, to the noises of traffic, to the airhorns at the hockey games—and by doing so, be able to answer those questions.
