Photo Story: Holi 2013

On Saturday afternoon, Boston University students ran to the new pedestrian mall behind Warren Towers to celebrate Holi. The festival is a traditional Hindu celebration of the renewal of spring and farewell to winter. It has become popular within many cultures but always involves throwing colored, and sometimes scented, powders at participants. On occasion, the event may be held around a bonfire and incorporate dancing. This year, students celebrated by flinging colorful powder at each other and dancing to both popular American and Indian music. The celebration lasted roughly two hours and left the streets of the pedestrian mall coated in colors but also in joy.

Holi was to be postponed after Friday night’s incident at MIT and the subsequent University-wide lockdown; however, after the arrest of the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing, the Boston University Hindu Students Council agreed to go ahead with the event as originally scheduled. It seems many were glad that they did.
