Boston Comic Con 2013: The Cosplay

Back broken across his foe’s knee, Batman had finally met his defeat. Bane laughed while holding the Dark Knight’s limp, mangled body in his clutches. A crowd gathered. And then, most peculiarly, they started laughing. And taking photos! A man cracked a joke implying Bane needed a lozenge for his voice, and even Batman started to laugh. Batman stood up nonchalantly, shook Bane’s hand, and the two smiled at the crowd. Another day at Boston Comic Con 2013.

This past weekend, people from all around gathered at the Seaport World Trade Center for the rescheduled Boston Comic Con. The first date had been cancelled due to the Boston Marathon bombings, and, by the size and enthusiasm of the attendees, it became clear that no momentum was lost in the rescheduling.

One of the most fascinating and exciting aspects of any convention is the cosplay (a portmanteau of “costume” and “roleplay”). People dress as their favorite characters, hero or villain, to celebrate their geeky preferences. This gallery, the first of many pieces of Boston Comic Con coverage, celebrates that cosplay. Click each page to see a new wonderous outfit!

  1. Great pictures! I saw some very good costumes at the Boston Comic Con. Unfortunately, Cosplayers clog up the halls, make traffic jams and DON’T BUY ANYTHING!!!! They treat it like it’s a big costume party, not a convention.

    1. Um, to reply to Zizzy, you are just centering on one type of Cosplayer. My picture is up there in the 27 photos, I am an avid cosplay, yet I buy hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise, art and other things while I am there. Want to rethink your view of cosplayers? Maybe you should respect the cosplayers because without them comic cons across the nation wouldn’t exist like they do today. And vise versa; without comic cons cosplaying wouldn’t be what it is today.

    2. Had a table at this show, and tons of cosplayers bought stuff from me. A few of those with big/awkward costumes came back after they dressed down, because they want to wander the floor normally without being stopped for photos, or bothering tables with their costumed presence. So perhaps they weren’t buying from you because you didn’t have good stuff. šŸ™‚

    1. Hi Chris,

You took a great picture with me at the con. Just wanted to say thanks again. Great job with the Cap costume. The pic I got with you is one of my favorites of the weekend.

  2. You got a good one of me… (Doc Oct). this was my first time cos-playing as well… it was fun but I underestimated the number of people who would want to stop me for my pic.. and to that guy who complained about displayers.. I buy lots of stuff
