What is “Bursting the Bubble”?

bub·ble noun
/’bəbəl/

1. a thin sphere of liquid enclosing air or another gas.
2. used to refer to a good or fortunate situation that is isolated from reality or unlikely to last.

Whether you be a first year or senior, you have already, or are about to discover, that BU’s city campus, for all of its pretending to be a part of the city of Boston, might as well have four walls and a quad lawn.

“Bursting the Bubble” will try to make it easier for potential escapees to see past this deception.

What we affectionately dub the “campus bubble” has affected many a student at one time or another; the comfort, society, and the interconnection of Commonwealth Ave. and the areas immediately around it make it hard to find any reason to venture outside. It’s an easy trap to slip into, and people can go the entire four (or more) years without ever having explored Boston and Massachusetts.

It’s important to experience different communities, as each one has its own unique culture, but it also provides a temporary escape from university life, which can be stressful and all-consuming, or can be hard to let go of post-graduation. Yes, a world exists outside the alluring study carrels and seductively soft sofas of Mugar Library!

Being in a new city, it’s hard to know where to start and what to do that isn’t the touristy type of activity we all did on our respective initial visits. This column will feature different things to do and places to see in and around Boston’s various neighborhoods, all of which have distinct personalities.

From places to eat and people watch to nice places to take a walk and look at art or trees, we’ll start with what’s close by and work our way outward as the year progresses. So explore! There is much Vitamin D to be had!
