The A Capella World is Literally Aca-Awesome

It was no surprise to see a full house at the BU Treblemakers’ first concert of the year!

The widely acclaimed a capella group known as the BU Treblemakers hosted their first concert on March 28th at 7 P.M. in COM 101. This was also their sixth performance thus far since the beginning of the school year in September 2013.

“Cluster of A Capella” is a concert the group hosts every year and is an excellent way to showcase not only other BU a capella groups on campus, but also those from other schools.

The Treblemakers even reached out to Boston University’s rival school – Boston College. Unfortunately, the a capella group declined. It’s sad that we could not watch this rivalry play out in a potential pitch perfect showdown.

There were four a capella groups that performed, excluding the Treblemakers: In Achord, donning their colorful shirts and red ties; Terpsochore, giving the crowd a mysterious vibe in their all black attire; Dear Abbeys, sporting their pale blue shirts with red ties; and Oxford Alternotives, a British a capella group from the United Kingdom.

The Dear Abbeys, an all-boys a capella group sang John Legend’s heart-wrenching “All With Me”. The crowd was humming along to this popular hit; their heads swinging from side to side.

The Oxford Alternotives was the only a capella group not associated with BU. Rumor has it that while traveling along the east coast, they reached out to the Treblemakers. The Treblemakers hosted all 16 members of the group during their stay for those few days.

The group shuffled on stage while one of the members struggled with the microphone. He uneasily laughed, “Oops, I broke the microphone” in his British accent, and in those few words he had buttered up the audience, sending many chuckles around.

The all girls a capella group, Terpsochore, sang Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” which sent a chill through the audience. It was a deeply magical performance, especially because it opposed the joyful vibe many stereotypical a capella groups seem to have.

The last performance of the concert was by the Treblemakers themselves. Kayla Jo Pichichero sang Ingrid Michaelson’s “Turn to Stone,” Adrienne Rube sang Ariana Grande’s “Honeymoon Avenue,” and Tamara Boyle sang her first solo of “No Diggity” in a mash-up with two other members, Kayla Pichichero and Evan Lindsey.

When asking Boyle how she felt singing her first solo, she responded, “It’s always nerve wracking performing in general, so having the audience focus solely on you is pretty terrifying, but also an awesome wave of adrenaline. Especially because the audience at concerts like these are always so supportive and not there to judge you, but to have a good time.”

The Treblemakers have their next concert on April 26th at 7 P.M. in room 206 of the Photonics center. Who knows who they’ll bring next time?
