So I guess October is the month of Feasts, because there are a few great foodie events coming up… Namely:
Boston Local Food Festival, Saturday 10/02/10 (this weekend!), 11am-5pm, and FREE: Basically, a rather expansive festival dedicated to promoting local, sustainable food. It’ll include farm stands featuring produce from a number of nearby farms, food demos and sample preparations from various Boston area-based restaurant chefs and gourmet food shop owners, recipe contests, beer tastings from local breweries (unfortunately NOT free, but costs about a $1 or less per sample, depending on what ticket package you get), green awareness events, live music, etc. Happening downtown near South Station T stop, on the waterfront at Fort Point Channel.
Oktoberfest, Sunday 10/10/10, 12pm-6pm, and FREE: Bostonians get to enjoy a downsized version of the world’s largest fair, Oktoberfest, which is held for over two gluttonous weeks in Munich, Germany. Oktoberfest showcases traditional Bavarian delicacies, including brezn (pretzel), hendl (chicken), schweinsbraten (pork roast), many varieties of würstl (sausage), and of course, another German specialty: bier. Lots of bier. There will be live entertainment (Envision: Oompah music and chicken dancing) and collectively hundreds of restaurants and small vendors participating in all the yummy creations. Check it out at Harvard Square (although Harpoon and a few other breweries have their own beer-focused Oktoberfest celebration).
Boston Vegetarian Food Festival, Saturday 10/30/10, 10am-6pm and Sunday 10/31/10, 10am-4pm, and FREE: Very similar (event-wise) to the Boston Local Food Festival except, well, meat-free (so don’t expect a whole hog cut-and-roast demo at this one). This festival will host an array of natural food vendors, local farmers and their wares, discounted “show only” product offers, food demos, recipe sharing, samples galore, etc. It’s their 15th year, and it has only gotten better! Takes place at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, 1350 Tremont Street (less than a mile away from the Museum of Fine Arts, and across the street from the Roxbury orange line T stop).
Come and eat, eat, eat! It’s ’bout time to store up for the long winter anyway, right?
