Pennsylvania native and Boston University graduate Vikesh Kapoor is celebrating the makings of his new 7-inch record, “Newspress Scare,” at a release show in Cambridge tomorrow night. The show will be at the Democracy Center, located at 45 Mt. Auburn Street in Harvard Square. I talked with the folk artist about his music and the show:
-How would you describe your music?
Contemporary songs
-What does the new 7″ sound like? How is it different from other music you’ve written?
The 7″ sounds like it was recorded in the early 60s but the title track is a contemporary song. I sang “Mack the Knife” just to confuse everyone.
I haven’t written much other released music yet, so it’s hard to say how this is different. I still have paint left on this here palette.
-What are you most excited about regarding the show?
Getting to sing for new ears, getting Henry Finch and a physical comedian on the same bill. Excited just as much as others, I hope.
-Did you choose the other artists playing in the show, and if so, why did you choose them specifically?
I chose them because they’re all real good at what they do and have made me laugh and cry. I didn’t want to have a run-of-the-mill show. Mama Bird shows have been about getting people in this town to experience shows in new kinds of ways. That way shows are more enjoyable and memorable. My release show is a small production, really, and I’ll tell you that people are going to the Neon Indian show because he’s hot shit this week, but they won’t remember that show in three years–but they’ll remember this one. Everyone performing is so good. The smart ones are attending both shows, since the release show will start and end early.
-Why did you choose the venue as the Democracy Center in Cambridge?
Democracy Center is nice to us and Club 47 was also on Mount Auburn St in the late 50s-early 60s. I think I found a strand of Joan Baez’s hair floating through the air near the old chandelier. Also, choosing this venue is about having control over a show bill, presentation and overall expression.
