Glee, Myself and I

Personally, I’m a huge fan of FOX’s new series “Glee.” The show is incredibly clever, the cast is one of the most talented groups of people on television, and they all just seem like genuinely good people.

That being said, I’ve got some issues with it. Most of the time I’m so sucked in I almost cry when the hour is up and I have to wait another week for more “Glee,” but other times I want to change the channel just to make the awkward stop. So here are a few of the reasons why I’m tuning in, and a few of the reasons why I wish I had a Snuggie so I could reach for the remote without my arm getting cold.

Why I’m Tuning in Each Week:

Sue’s comments about Will’s hair – Sue Sylvester herself would have been at the top of

this list, but I assume that is just a given. Jane Lynch is a goddess and plays this part almost too well. And perhaps it’s my bias against Will Schuester (we’ll get into that later) but whenever she tears him apart with witty side comments I get some kind of sick joy out of it. Some of my personal favorites:

Sue [to Will]: “You’ll be adding revenge to the long list of things you’re no good at, right next to being married, running a high school glee club, and finding a hairstyle that doesn’t make you look like a lesbian.”

Sue [to Will]: “You have enough product in your hair to season a wok.”

In the episode “The Power of Madonna,” Sue explains her need to pester Will about his hair, because of her jealousy. This made me nervous that this revelation would cause the hair comments to cease, but luckily she keeps doing it. Oh, and Will’s comeback that one time was weak. Who tries to beat Sue Sylvester at her own game?

The ridiculous things Brittany says – I am SO pleased with the direction they’ve gone in with the Cheerios Brittany and Santana. Previously used simply as Sue’s decoys to bring down Glee club, Santana and Brittany are now the guaranteed comedic relief each week. Even if it isn’t the greatest episode, you know you’re getting a good Brittany quote to last you through the week. My all time favorite? When Will used the word “misogynist” and Brittany pulled out this gem: “When I pulled my hamstring I went to a misogynist.”

Puck – I don’t necessarily need him to talk, I just instantly enjoy every shot he’s in because – well, do I really need to explain myself here? Look at him.

The off chance that Artie might get a solo – Artie is played by former boy-bander Kevin McHale from the group Not Like Them (I’ve never heard of them either), and while he is geeked out to the max on “Glee,” he’s actually pretty adorable. I also think he is one of the most talented male singers on the show. Of course, no one can hit those high notes quite like Kurt can, but when it comes to those low notes, Artie is all over it. He’s been given a few short solos in previous episodes, but I’m just waiting for the day they give him his own song.

Why I Sometimes Want to Tune Out:

Will Schuester – I’m sorry, but I can’t stand Will. I think he is the biggest creep to ever be allowed to work in a high school. Who is that involved in their students’ love/sex lives? I’ll admit sometimes they invite him into it, but half the time he’s just eavesdropping. And the way he talks to people! It’s like this Justin Timberlake wannabe just knows he’s the belle of the ball. And when he sings and dances it just gets worse. Don’t get me wrong, the actor, Matthew Morrison, is very talented and has a great voice. But when he puts on that face he gets when he’s busting out his sub-par dance moves, I just want to smack him and say “You’re not a sex symbol, you’re a high school Spanish teacher. Enough is enough.” In fact, quite a few of the adults on the show are just too creepy. When Idina Menzel’s character, the coach of Vocal Adrenaline, watches Jesse make-out with Rachel in the auditorium, and then Jesse makes eye contact with his coach while making out?! Too far, “Glee,” too far.

Finn – I have a love/hate relationship with Finn. Sometimes he’s cute and has some great one-liners, but other times he is just so awkward and uncoordinated I can’t even handle myself. Mostly when he’s dancing. I think this exchange pretty much sums it up for me:

Brittany: You’re a really good dancer.
Finn: Thanks, but my feet weren’t really moving.
Brittany: That was the best part.

Rachel’s faces – I know people will hate me for this, so let me say this first: Lea Michele is so beyond talented it blows my mind. I have nothing but respect for her. However, as someone who was trained as a theater actress, her facial expressions are larger than life. And sometimes they make me uncomfortable. Usually I find it charming because she plays the character of Rachel Berry so well, but during that “Hello” duet with Jesse St. James…I was uncomfortable. Although, his creep-factor wasn’t helping.

To sum things up: Some of these characters need to tone down the creepiness and Sue Sylvester and the Ceerios pretty much make the show.
