WTBU: In the Running for Champions of Local Music

Boston University’s radio station, WTBU, provides great tunes, great talk on sports and news, and a great time for all involved and listening. By broadcasting for 22 hours a day, seven days a week, there is a great variety of shows to reach all audiences. One new adjustment this year has been to extend the show Left of the Dial to five days a week, (every Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m.) where the station can have an outlet for Boston’s great local music scene. This has helped WTBU towards it’s most recent achievement: being nominated for the “Biggest Champion of the Local Scene” award by the College Music Journal.

The College Music Journal, referred to as the CMJ, monitors the music industry of college radio stations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Out of this large pool, WTBU was nominated along with four other stations (CFUV in Victoria, CJLO in Montreal, KDHX in St. Louis and WKDU in Philadelphia) for the 2010 Biggest Champion of the Local Scene award.

A key part of college radio in general is highlighting the local music scene and helping to gain audiences to shows in the area. Many bands’ careers have been propelled by their college radio exposure and many college students gain knowledge about new music through their university’s stations. WTBU has put a lot of effort into it’s involvement in the local Boston music scene, which has so much to offer.

Now that all the nominations are in for the 2010 CMJ Awards (including such other categories as “most love for the game” and “most adventurous”), voting will take place October 19-21 for CMJ badge holders, with the Awards Ceremony being held on October 21 during the CMJ Music Marathon’s College Day at NYU’s Rosenthal Pavillion. So wish the best of luck to WTBU and make sure to tune in to the station for your local music fix!
