A Capella’s All For Charity

The concert will feature the BosTones, the Dear Abbeys and X-ception.

“Peace, love, and a capella” is the slogan for the BosTones, one of BU’s many a capella groups. Considering how the group has chosen to spend the Saturday night of Halloween weekend, it’s clear all the members live by this mantra.

The BosTones joined forces with the Dear Abbeys, another of BU’s a capella groups, and X-cepetion, BU’s step team, to plan a charity show and raffle at BU Central this Saturday, October 30 at 9 p.m. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit BU’s chapter of Global Medical Brigades, which travels to the Honduras every winter to provide medical care where access is limited.

The BosTones try to put on a charity event every year, if not each semester. Nicole Sorice, COM ‘11 and the BosTones president, noted that the past two years have included a Haiti relief concert and a concert to support an arts program in Quincy.

“We love performing, and what better way to do that than to donate to other groups? It’s awesome to do what we love and help other groups out,” Sorice said.

The coed group of 15 chose Global Medical Brigades because one of their senior members, Aaron Maybury (CAS ‘11), is also a member of GMB. Maybury and other members of GMB helped get food and raffle donations for the event while the BosTones coordinated the actual show.

“We’ve always really wanted to do a show with the Dear Abbeys,” Sorice explained. Because they had a successful show with the group last year and, as Sorice admitted, “two hours of a capella is kind of a lot to sit through,” they brought in X-ception as well.

The show is free with a BU ID, but raffle tickets are $1 each and guests are asked to either purchase tickets or make a donation to the GMB. There are several prizes (a full list of which can be found on the event’s facebook page), but they include a $500 giftcard for spring semester textbooks from Barnes and Noble and beauty basket from Sephora valued at $300.

Raffle tickets are being sold through Friday at the GSU link and will also be available at the event.

In addition to the raffle, the show will have free pizza and Raising Cane’s for guests.

Although they don’t currently have plans for a spring charity concert, Sorice said the group hopes to visit the South Boston Community Health Center and perform for a youth arts program.
