Getting into the Holiday Spirit

With Thanksgiving in a few short days, the holidays are upon us once again, which for some is the best time of the year. However there are those Scrooges who could do without the holiday cheer. There is a cure, though, that will defrost your ears as well as your heart with these simple ideas to start off the festivities.

  1. Listen to Christmas music. As I type this now, the sweet melodies of “Let it Snow” emanate from my computer and really make me feel merry. I would not recommend a nonstop playlist of holiday classics; a little goes a long way. Michael Buble is my top choice, but there are so many artist and albums to choose from.  It doesn’t have to be religious either. Jingle Bells, anyone?

  2. Drink something hot. It is proven (kind of) that hot drinks makes one feel better. When the temperatures drop low, it’s only necessary to keep warm. Hot chocolate and eggnog are traditional, but if you are of age why not make that a hot toddy?
  3. Spend time with the ‘rents. Despite living on our own and being independent citizens of the world, we all need our families. Even if the idea of spending time with family makes you cringe, try to look on the bright side. The holidays are about giving, sharing, and most of all love. Now doesn’t that make you feel are warm and fuzzy inside?
  4. Get thee to a movie store. There is nothing more relaxing than watching a movie, and holiday movies are some of the most lovable. My suggestions are “A Christmas Carol,” “Love Actually,” “Home Alone” and “Elf.”
  5. Seek out the extra specialness. I’m sure in your neighborhood or surrounding community someone is competing for the best Christmas lights. Lights may seem trivial but seeing a dazzling display on a house or in a park is purely magical.  Every year Boston holds a tree lightning ceremony at the Common, and it includes over 80 trees and music too. Holidays don’t have to be expensive and fancy; enjoying the simple pleasures of the holiday spirit is just enough to do the trick.
