Girl Talk’s ‘All Day’ Will Keep You Dancing All Night

In case you were needing a new mash up soundtrack for all your hyperactive clubbing needs, Girl Talk released a new album last week for free download. This album, All Day, has been in production since 2008 and even though there wasn’t a lot of hype or expectation surrounding the release, Gregg Gillis is credited with basically breaking the internet on the day of the release due to the album’s high demand.

All Day is intended to be listened to as a whole, and is available for download as such, but is divided into separate tracks for “easier navigation,” or if you don’t have over an hour to listened to an overwhelmingly amount of sampled songs intricately and artistically weaved together.

In the first (almost six minute long) track alone, enough songs to please almost anyone interested in any genre are sampled, and Missy Elliot’s voice over The Ramone’s guitar progressions seems unnaturally natural – these mash ups can be odd because of our familiarity with the individual songs but are somehow pieced together in a way that makes sense, and is welcomed excitedly. The samples vary in length, but as you hear one flow into the next, it creates a sound so right you question why (or if…) no one has made these connections before.

As you listen to the album continually, the tracks are seamless, but skipping through the set list it becomes apparent that every song starts with a varying sound and energy. Gregg Gillis works the samples so well that you don’t even notice when Peter Gabriel blends into Fat Joe and the entire atmosphere of the music experience has shifted, you just follow along. But if you choose to listen by track, each one has a different overall sound to offer, and you honestly get excited hearing what songs make up this new sound together.

So many different artists make up this one fluid stream of music, and even if it’s not your style, you have to awe at how Girl Talk can manipulate your favorites in a way you never thought possible. I’ll admit Girl Talk isn’t the kind of music I put on just to listen to as I do work, but in the right situations can provide the perfect, energetic soundtrack to an upbeat night. And since it is a completely free download, there’s really nothing to lose in listening to All Day, even if you’re just curious as to how many varying songs are actually compiled in this latest release.
