Semester in Review: A Freshman’s Take

Dorm evacuations at 6:45 in the morning, dance parties lasting into the wee hours and running to class with a couple of minutes to spare. These are just a few details of my first semester at BU. BU has been good to me though, and I’ve enjoyed being in a city as much as I dreamed I would. Luckily, I have not been a victim of the “freshman suck” chants I remember so well from high school that plagued my first year, yet these months at BU have still been eventful. So what’s my perspective on Fall 2010? Read on and find out.

Dorms and dining halls: I’ve been pretty happy so far with my dorm situation – a double in Sleeper Hall – but the noisy elevators suck. I have heard many times that the West Campus dining hall is the best, and although I haven’t been to every hall, it is pretty good.

Student Union Overhaul: To be honest, I don’t know much about the Student Union or what the changes they promised for this year. I would suggest that they appear at more events other than sports to get freshman involved. I have heard about the GPS  that alerts you to when the next BUS comes around, which would definitely save some from missing their classes.

No more Four Loko?!? Ok, I know Four Loko has gotten a lot of people riled up, but personally I never tried it, and I know I didn’t miss out anything. Obviously if the drink is dangerous then it should be banned. I guess Four Loko lovers will have to get their buzz elsewhere.

Halloween FAIL: I was really looking forward to Halloween, but unfortunately it wasn’t that great. I bought tickets for the Masquerade with Shwayze thinking it would be the hot spot, but it was the opposite. The room was half empty….was I missing something? I should have taken my cat costume to the streets of Boston!

Likealittle: I had not heard of this site until some upperclassmen mentioned it, and I must admit it is sort of a boredom cure. BU uses this site the most, and I guess people must have a lot of free time. Ex. A: “ Male, Black hair. I wanna put my cat on your grill. Let’s do it like Rosie O’Donnell at bisexual bridal shower.” Umm, need I say more?

RateBU: This recent phenomenon has rocked the whole school, especially those girls featured on the site without their consent. I think it’ll probably be taken down after so many complaints, but I get the feeling that the creator made this for attention and controversy. His statement that “everyone will be judged” gets a laugh out of me because of its sheer irrelevance. Is he saying that we should judge those girls just because? Copying what you saw in a movie isn’t to smart when you know girls will think you are an arrogant a**. Just saying.

If there is one thing I’ve learned my first semester at BU, it is to get involved in as much as you can. Rather to have ten options than two. So far I’ve tried yoga, learned some guitar and French, and started writing for the Quad. I still have not been to a hockey game-shame-but I’ve got plenty time. Though I might have gained some wisdom while being here. Never underestimate the time it takes to get from one end of the campus to the other; ten minutes to get from class to class is miniscule. Might I suggest rentable segways BU?

  1. Great, you attend a prestigious university for the parties.
In this time of tightening budgets, school funds being cut and tax payers being bled dry, why don’t we shorten college to 3 years.
If people have so much time for play, surely compacting the schedule, would do no harm to learning.

A good third of courses, have little to do with eventual, actual work or home life, just fluff to amuse students.
With students now on food stamps and complaining about growth in tuition and cost of student loans, now would be a good time to compress the schedule to eliminate one year.

What would it hurt, sports teams having less time to train out their athletes. Missing a year of carefree partying, much at tax payers expense. If you are to dense to the teaching curriculum for public schools in 3 years, you are to dense, to be a teacher.

Oh, I did graduate in 3 years, even though staff thought I might miss much of the college experience, doing it that way. All I missed was a year of paying outrageous fees and sitting in classes with teenagers warehoused in a college for 4 years, just to get them out of the house.
