One magical night each semester Boston University’s dining halls are transformed into a kind of food haven by the Dining Services Visiting Chef Series. In other words, they’re the two nights a year BU students want to make sure they’re eating in the dining hall.
On Thursday, BU Dining Services hosted their latest Visiting Chef Series night featuring Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill. The event spanned dining halls campus-wide and showcased some of Jerry Remy’s best dishes: Jerry’s Pulled Pork Sliders, The Remy Burger and the Evil Empire Cheesecake, among many more.
Campus chefs collaborated with Jerry Remy’s Executive Chef Jacqueline Kelly to re-create the menu on a scale suited to serve approximately 6,000 students, according to Dining Services.
Warren and West Campus dining halls also got a visit from Wally the Green Monster, as part of the event’s celebration of Red Sox opening day. In some East Campus dining halls, students could get their photos taken in front of a green screen to be shown at Fenway Park. And, of course, snacks like cotton candy, Cracker Jack, and fried pickles were featured alongside the main fare.
“Even though we offer a wide variety of foods and have a constantly changing menu, students still fall into monotonous eating habits,” said an anonymous Dining Services representative. “Theme meals like the Visiting Chef Series completely change the look and feel of the dining room.”
The Visiting Chef Series began in 1994 and has featured some of Boston’s best restaurants like Top of the Hub and Legal Seafoods, as well as renowned chefs Martin Yan, Jacque Pepin and Mary Esposito, according to Dining Services.
“Our goal with the Visiting Chef Series is to give the students the same experience as visiting a Boston-area restaurant without actually having to go there,” the representative said.
The next installment of the Visiting Chef Series won’t be until the fall, but get your thinking caps on and send suggestions to dining@bu.edu or tweet @budiningservice!
