At the Drive In: Movies at the BU Beach

During the day, BU Beach is usually full of students playing football or, on a summer day, tanning. However, at night, the yard sitting behind the College of Arts and Sciences is usually  empty. This changed on Friday night, thanks to the annual Drive-In Movie, put together by Boston University’s Programming Council.

The programming council is Boston University’ s student-run programming board. They are one of the most active student groups on campus, putting together concerts, comedy shows, and other entertainment on campus, to create a sense of community within the university in addition to finding quality entertainment. In the past, they have attracted performers like mash-up artist Girl Talk and rapper Big Boi.

The drive-in movie is an annual event that the organization puts on for students to come together and enjoy a communal laugh or action thrill.

This year, the first movie choice was Bridesmaids, starring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Wiig’s character is the maid of honor for her best friend’s (Rudolph) wedding, which then sets off a hilarious chain of events, which serve to satirize the role of a bridesmaid. The second was Hangover Part II, with Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis. The premise is the same as the first Hangover movie, but places the terrible threesome in Thailand, for Stu’s (Helms) wedding, and after one night, the boys are again left to pick up the pieces of a long, exciting night in Bangkok (side note: Mike Tyson is the best part of the film).

Thanks to clear skies and a cool summer breeze, most moveigoers found it to be a great night. John Kim, a sophomore in CAS, said that he didn’t even know about the event. “I was just coming down from the GSU, and saw the screen,” he said. “I had nothing to do, but then I saw my friends and decided to put off my homework for a while longer.”

Other students saw the night as a chance to catch up on the jokes people had been making all summer. Michele Ingram, a freshman, hadn’t been able to see either film this summer. “I spent this summer working at a camp in New Hampshire with young kids,” she said. “I really wanted to see ‘Bridemaids’ because I love Maya Rudolph.”

Sidd Amalean thought of the movie night as a great way to come together.”The thing is that we all are here learning, but sometimes we are all separated,” said the junior. “Then there are events like this were you see so many people just hanging out and relaxing. It’s nice.”
