Beginning on March 23, the BU Programming Council will present its first annual “SPF” (Spring. PC. Frenzy), a two day extravaganza of music, comedy and general fun. Mock the cutesy title all you want, but PC intends to kick off this tradition with quite the bang. That bang comes in the form of a Childish Gambino concert at the House of Blues.
Childish Gambino is the stage name of writer turned actor turned comedian turned rapper Donald Glover. As an actor, Glover is most recognizable for his role as Troy on NBC’s Community. While the jack-of-all-trades began dabbling in the music scene in 2008, he was really cast into the spotlight and amassed his diverse following with his 2011 release of the track “Freaks and Geeks” among others. Childish Gambino’s raps are witticism-packed and filled with aptly placed pop culture references. The award-winning comedy writer doesn’t take his lyrics – or himself – too seriously. After all, Glover devised his stage name from a Wu-Tang Clan online name generator. He’s the rapper for the nerd, the hipster, and the hip-hop fanatic alike.
The last time Childish Gambino performed in Boston was last November to a sold out crowd at the House of Blues, the same venue for the SPF performance. Jeremy Lowe, the Programming Council event manager said when planning this year’s spring event, the council tried to brainstorm what performer would be a good fit for BU. They knew Childish Gambino had a large following at our school and that many BU students had, in fact, attended his sold out November performance. Lucky for us, the dates worked out and the rapper approved the tour date. The stop will be one on Childish Gambino’s headlining nationwide tour with rapper Danny Brown, whose 2011 album XXX has catapulted him into popularity. Accompanying the two is the hip-hop group Gym Class Heroes. As of now, there’s no meet-and-greet in the works, but Childish Gambino is known for being particularly interactive with his fans.
For BU students who haven’t been privileged enough to encounter any Gambino, some suggested downloads: “Be Alone,” “Freaks and Geeks,” “Put it In My Video,” “Do Ya Like” (which contains an awesome Adele sample), and “Heartbeat” and “Bonfire,” both off his latest album, Camp Gambino.
For tickets to the Childish Gambino show, visit the Programming Council of
fice on the second floor of the GSU. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased with cash, credit or convenience points. The concert will take place on Friday, March 23 at 8:30 at the House of Blues.
Do I have to attend BU to attend this concert?
Unfortunately, yes. BU IDs are required for entry in addition to your ticket.
Are there still tickets available?
There are, but unfortunately Childish Gambino is no longer performing due to an injury of some sort. Gym Class Heroes and Michael Ian Black are the SPF performers.
