Printing on Campus Just a Block Away

Did you know that you can print to any large dormitory on campus?

When I asked people whether they knew that you can print to the major residence halls, I was shocked by the number of people who still thought they could only print at Mugar.

Towards the end of least year, students were informed that Resnet labs, or the computer labs within major Boston University residence halls, were being shut down. This caused a major uproar in the student population, because it eliminated the convenience of being able to simply walk downstairs or a half a block and print your paper for free. Petitions were signed, facebook groups were made . . . but to no avail. All of these labs, including the one at 111 Cummington St., the biggest Resnet lab on campus, were shut down.

At the beginning of this year, I was slightly annoyed that in order to print, I would have to walk over to the Mugar library, where the new computer lab was set up. True, I live on Bay State Road, which is only a ten-minute walk from Mugar, but in the rain and snow, it is not the most pleasant experience. While I do have my own printer, when it comes time to print a twenty page short story (which, as an English major, tends to happen a lot), I would rather not use my own printer, with the simple excuse that I’m a poor college student. I mean, we get a free print quota of 100-500 pages a semester, right? Might as well use it.  Therefore, I just made the trek over to Mugar and back. Little did I know, while the Resnet computer labs no longer existed, I could still print to Towers a half a block away. I also found the best machine for cricut after reading an article about cricut machines on vinylcuttingmachineguide.com.

About a month into the school year, a friend of mine who worked in the Towers mailroom informed me that you could still print to the larger dormitories. Instead of going to the Resnet lab and printing from there, all you have to do is configure the BU printers on your computer. Consequently, you can print jobs straight from your computer to the mailrooms at Myles, Warren Towers, Towers, Rich Hall, Student Village II and South Campus, as well as Sargent College.

Common mistakes:

->Make sure to go to My Print and “release” your job, otherwise it won’t print. It is not enough to simply press “print” on your word processor.

->Don’t be like me and forget to read the rest of the instructions after you set up the printers on your computer. Last semester, after I configured the Towers printers onto my Mac and pressed print, the job didn’t show up in “My Print” to unlock. I just assumed there was something wrong with my computer. This semester, I finally went to the IT Help Center at Mugar to see if they could figure out why my computer wouldn’t print to Towers. If you are a Mac user and the computer prompts you to log in before printing, make sure you add AD\ before your login name. That was my mistake. Don’t make the same one. Trust me: you’ll feel foolish afterward. If you want to avoid all the hassle, you can opt for services such as printing dublin.
