Don’t Forget to Love Your Body!

Love Your Body Day took place on Wednesday, October 20th, in the Women’s Resource Center, and the second I walked in, I felt welcome. With the constant stream of thin, beautiful women presented in the media, and all the promiscuous Halloween costumes on display now, it’s important to remind ourselves of how much we love our bodies!

Though a faulty projector refused to let a PowerPoint presentation about the way women are presented in the media be shown, the day was an overall success.  The afternoon kicked off with a spoken word artist performing a poem full of passion and emotion. Before the artist began her poem, she stated, “I wrote this poem because I want you all to know that it’s okay if your body is a hopeless romantic and your mind is not. You shouldn’t be ashamed.”

The artist’s poem was followed by the group writing “mantras”, or reminders of things that we should love about ourselves. I myself chose to write a manifesto of the things I loved about myself instead, fold it, and put it in my purse to pull out whenever I am feeling a bit down.

Our afternoon ended in discussion about what we as individuals do to remind ourselves to love our bodies, with things such as yoga, showers, and even nakedness mentioned. The group was extremely open to talking about everything, including body hair, and even sex lives. At the very end, a vibrator was raffled off to one lucky winner – a perfect reminder that we can love everything about ourselves, all on our own.
