A Haiku: Stop and, like, Listen!

“A Haiku For ‘You'”

Hey you, girl in class

Why must you always e-shop?

Way not to learn shit.

Sorry guys, I just had to create my own haiku for this week’s column slash rant. Okay, so I’ve done it too. I’m guilty of the occasional Facebook surf and maybe even a quick trip to some online shopping website like eBay. Sometimes I check out the New York Times and the Globe (At least those are informative. Even the arts and entertainment sections have some value).

But what I really cannot stand to look at any more are those random girls in both my lecture and discussion classes, just endlessly staring at the screens of the Bloomingdales’ and Nordstrom’s websites and reading about some dumb celebrity doing another dumb, drunk thing on Perez Hilton’s site, all while they’re in a class that costs a lot of money and is kind-of like a really, like, big deal, like, you know?

Like I’ve said, I’m also guilty of occasionally letting my mind wander to the far-off worlds of the Internet, but it’s not something to be done all the time, during every class. We’re lucky enough as BU students to be able to be taught by many really intelligent and influential professors and we shouldn’t waste the opportunity to actually learn a thing or two from them.

So hey, girl(s) in class who constantly rather buy a totally cute blouse online than take an hour or so out of your day to learn. This isn’t high school, sweetie. No one is forcing you to be here. You’re going to college voluntarily and even though I must admit not every professor here is the best around or the easiest to understand through his or her accent, you should still pay attention. And then maybe instead of popping Adderall’s the night before the big exam you would already know a good amount of the information because you listened. Listening…what a strange concept, huh?
